THE NECESSARY FIRST STEP:
Aftercoolers perform two essential functions that provide the necessary first step in conditioning of compressed air. They reduce the temp of air to a safe operating range as well as remove moisture condensed during the cooling Process.

HIGH HEAT TRANSFER EFFICIENCY : water-cooled Aftercoolers are of Shell & Tube construction with the air passing through the tubes and water flowing in the opposite direction in the shell. Closely spaced baffles & tubes ensure high velocity & turbulence on both shell & tube sides as well use of high conductivity copper tubes, leads to high heat transfer efficiency.

EFFECTIVE WATER SEPARATION: Moisture condensed in the cooling process is carried away with the air and is separated in a Moisture Separator bolted directly to the shell & tube assembly. A central baffle forces the air to change direction twice resulting in effective separation of the condensed moisture. The collected moisture is periodically drained.

SOLID CONSTRUCTION: Rugged shell fabricated from carbon steel pipes & flanges. Tubes fitted in tube sheets by expansion machine which gives uniform & leak proof fit. Removable tube sheet fitted into shell flange with gap of just 0.5mm to ensure effective sealing by 'O' Ring.

VERSATILITY: By a minor modification, the Aftercooler can also be used as :

(a) Oil Cooler for Screw Compressor, DG Set & other machines (by removing Moisture Separator)
(b) Intercooler for Reciprocating Compressor (by adding Suction Drum)
(c) Compressed Air Dryer (by using chilled water, brine or refrigerant as cooling medium.)
(d) Heat Exchanger for cooling systems required for Moulding Machines, Generators & other Heavy Machinery

AFTERCOOLERS Compressed air is hot and saturated with moisture & oil when it leaves the air compressor. Aftercoolers rapidly cool this air so that it can be easily handled. Both water-cooled and air-cooled types are available. Water-cooled Aftercoolers are preferred because they achieve lower air temp and hence more moisture removal. Air-cooled Aftercoolers are installed where water is very hard or there are other constraints on availability of soft cooling water. Separated liquids can be drained manually or by auto drain valve

Coolers are critical components of Air / Gas Compressors DG Sets, Furnaces, Production Machines, etc. - they are used as Intercoolers, Aftercoolers & Oil Coolers. Tube Bundles are the most important part of Coolers. A variety of reasons (scale deposition, thermal stress, corrosion, etc.) result in reduced heat transfer, mixing of streams, etc due to which Tube Bundles have to be replaced.

SPANTECH offers Tube Bundles which are precision engineered to ensure perfect retrofit into the existing shell. Design improvements such as use of SS I chrome plated tube sheets & baffles to reduce effects of corrosion, changing size & number of tubes without affecting the heat transfer, etc, have also be done by us. An example is the Aftercooler of Atlas Copco Screw Compressor. Here, original 5 mm ID tubes used were getting choked frequently. By increasing size of tubes & making some design modifications, the new tube bundle (see picture) fitted perfectly in the existing shell. This change resulted in same heat transfer but with a much longer life.
